TIP! Plants need to take in CO2 to grow and thrive. More CO2 generally produces more luxurious plant growth.

Using a shovel in clay soil is a lot of work, not only is the clay hard, but it will stick to the shovel and make it twice as hard to handle. Get better results in clay by rubbing car wax or floor wax onto the shovel, then buff off and dig. This will both make the clay fall off of the surface, and prevent the surface from rusting.

TIP! Try to grow some wheat or cat grass around your cat’s favorite plants. In addition, you could put an item on the soil’s top around the plants which has a smell that cats hate, such as citrus peel or mothballs.

Try using climber plants to cover up your fences and walls. Many climbers can cover the wall or fence in as little as one growing season. You may also be interested in training them over an arbor or trellis. You can also grow them among existing landscape trees and plants. Some need to be tied to a support, whereas certain climbers attach themselves to a surface with tendrils or twining stems. A few good choices are climbing roses, wisteria, jasmine, honeysuckle and clematis.

TIP! If you learn that your soil has a high amount of alkaline, mix some used coffee grounds into it. Coffee grounds add acidity to the soil and are very cheap.

Use the correct type of soil for best results. Depending on the type of plants you desire in your garden, your natural soil may or may not be appropriate. You may also cultivate an artificial area comprised of just one type of soil.

TIP! Get some gardening knee pads if you find yourself kneeling on the ground a lot to do your gardening. You will spend a lot of time on your knees while gardening, which can result in knee pain.

You may want to think about having evergreens that will produce berries planted in your yard. These plants will look good year-round, even during the winter, when your other plants have lost their bloom. Some evergreens that will provide winter color are the American Holly, Common Snowberry, American Cranberrybush, and the Winterberry.

Pest control can become a major issue. Since your vegetables are meant to be eaten, refrain from spraying them with harsh chemicals. So to help you control the pests that may invade your garden, you will want to stay vigilant. In many cases, you can simply remove the pests from your plants by picking them off.

TIP! Place organic mulch close to your vegetables. The mulch will help keep the soil moist for longer periods of time.

When horticulture, try not to use broad-spectrum pesticides. It’s true these pesticides kill the pests you don’t want, but they also lay waste to the advantageous insects that make those same pests a regular meal. Since these pesticides often affect the good bugs more than the bad, using them can actually increase your pest problem. This can lead to needing even more pesticides to eliminate the problem insects.

TIP! Learn the best harvesting time for each kind of vegetable you plant. For the optimum flavor, be sure to follow the guidelines for planting and picking.

Choose one plant and make it the focal point of your garden. A focal point can help direct a viewers gaze. Usually, the focal point will be a plant that is unique from the plants around it.

TIP! Avoid damage from the sun by dressing correctly when you garden. There are many ways to protect yourself from the sun’s damaging rays such as wearing sunglasses, sunscreen and wide-brimmed hats.

If you want your garden to be off-limits to your dog, spray a scented perimeter around it using things like old perfumes or aftershave. This covers up the smells that bring dogs to gardens in the first place, which means dogs are less likely to enter the garden.

TIP! Are you a parent? If you are, try planting some strawberries like everbearing strawberries in your garden. Kids delight in the idea of growing things and seeing how things change over time.

While gardening you must make sure your knees are protected. Bending over from a standing position is something many people cannot do. To get down to plant level without pain, try kneeling instead. A knee pad can be placed under your knees to protect them from damage and strain while you are working.

TIP! To be more efficient when working in your organic garden, have your tools close at hand. Use a large bucket, or wear rugged pants with several pockets.

Take the time needed to plant your seeds. Begin by adding moisture to the soil. Plant the seeds evenly to ensure that they have ample room to grow. Bury them at a depth that is three times that of the height of the seeds. There are some seeds that require light to grow, so they must not be buried.
