Organic gardening can be an every day part of your life, but understanding how it works can be hard. There are a multitude of seeds and starter plants available. This article contains tips that will ensure you have everything you need to start an organic garden.

If little ones live in your home, consider including everbearing strawberries in the garden plot. For kids, there are few things as fun as picking fruit fresh from the garden. Your children will be much more interesting in helping out if they know they’ll get to enjoy some tasty strawberries.

If you choose to use organic methods to care for your houseplants, you should bear in mind that certain plants require more sunlight than others. If your dwelling does not enjoy a great deal of natural sunlight, it makes sense to grow only those varieties meant to thrive in such environments. Otherwise, you could simply use your own lights.

Have your gardening tools near you to minimize the time spent searching for them. You should use a large pail and wear sturdy pants that have several pockets. Keep your gloves, pruning shears, a hand spade and your other tools handy to quickly and easily do your garden maintenance.

Have plastic bags on hand to put over dirty gardening shoes. This way, you can get in and out quickly, and get back to work in the garden.

Pine Needles

For some plants, pine needles makes an ideal mulch. Some garden plants are high in acidity, and do better with acidic soil. Pine needles are an excellent form of mulch for these types of plants. Covering your plant beds with a layer of pine needles will allow the pine needles to disperse their acidic nutrients into the soil for your plants.

Coffee grounds are a great addition to soil. They contain nitrogenous nutrients which are essential to plant growth. Nitrogen is often the most important nutrient when it comes to plants thriving, and a solid source of nitrogen, like coffee grounds, urea, or compost, can boost growth speed and increase height.

Use an aged laundry basket when you want to collect your produce. This type of basket can double as a large colander for the fruits and vegetables you pick. If you leave your produce in the basket while rinsing it, the basket will be able to serve as a strainer, with the extra water dripping out the holes in the bottom of the basket.

Do you want to kill weeds naturally? Try using several newspaper layers to control weeds. Weeds can only grow when there is adequate sunlight. When you pile up layers of newspapers right on top of the weeds, they will suffocate and die. In time, the newspaper will decompose into the soil. Try adding some mulch on top of it to make appear more attractive.

Get your organic garden certified so you can credibly claim that your crops are organic. This will result in generating more sales and creating a loyal customer base.

Organic Gardening

Adopting organic gardening methods may take more effort than traditional approaches, but the payoff is considerably worth it. While the chemical companies claim great benefits, organic gardening will always provide the most rewarding and healthy crops.

Keep the soil healthy by adding mulch. A layer of mulch can protect the soil beneath. Mulch will ensure your soil is kept cool on hot days and protect your roots. This retains moisture for extended periods by reducing the rate at which water evaporates. It also doubles as weed control.

Avoid over-watering your plants. Excess water may hinder the plant’s roots from getting nutrition from the soil. Don’t go ahead and water your garden if the weather report predicts rain that day. After reviewing the weather forecast, you can decide whether or not to spend the time and resources watering the garden.
