Learn How To Garden In Small Gardens

Tips For Great Organic Gardening

Organic gardening will require some extra research and active avoidance of chemicals. This is due to the different factors you must learn about when going all natural. Things like pH balance and proper compost and sunlight all take on more importance due to the lack of chemical enhancers. Organic gardening can be a bit tricky for those who are trying it for the first time. You can do it well by taking advantage of the advice that offered below.

Water infused with aspirin is great for combating plant disease. An aspirin and a half, combined with a couple of gallons of water, will do amazing things for your plants. Spray the plants with the aspirin solution to help your plants fight disease. The spray ought to be applied approximately every three weeks.

If you have a high priority for sustainability in your organic gardening, try leaving a corner of the property undeveloped as a mini wildlife refuge. This can be a good area for the types of insects that pollinate plants. It can also be a sanctuary for birds, which will help some plants thrive. This can greatly improve the production of your organic garden.

If you’re growing plants indoors, keep your thermostat around 65 or 75 degrees daily. This is the optimum temperature to ensure strong growth. Another option is the use heat lamps that will protect your organic plants.

Maximize your time by keeping your tools close. Carry your tools in a bucket, or keep them in the pockets of a pair of rugged pants. Keep your gloves, pruning shears, a hand spade and your other tools handy to quickly and easily do your garden maintenance.

You can cover your muddied gardening footware easily by keeping plastic bags around. You will save time and be back in the garden much more quickly by doing this.

Pine Needles

Pine mulch can be highly effective under the right conditions. There are some plants that thrive in acidic soil. If you are growing these types of plants, simply gather up fallen pine needles for use in your garden. Sprinkle the pine needles over your beds. As the needles decompose, they add to the acid level in the soil.

Do you want to get rid of weeds in a natural way? Try using several newspaper layers to control weeds. Weeds require sunlight for growing. If the weeds have already sprouted, you can place the newspapers over them and they will die due to lack of sunlight. Old newspapers are a valuable addition to your compost heap. Put mulch over top to increase the attractiveness of the pile.

When planting seeds in containers, remember that the depth should be at least three times bigger than the seed. There are exceptions, however. Some types of seeds require more direct sunlight than others, and as such they should not be fully covered. Among the seeds meeting this definition are ageratum and petunias. If you are unsure as to whether or not your seeds should be covered or not, try to read the package or find the answer online.

One unusual tip in organic gardening, is to “pet” your seedlings often. Use your hands or a piece of cardboard and lightly ruffle the seedling about one or two times a day. This will make your plants grow faster and they will get bigger than they would have without this practice.

Treated Wood

If you’d like to create a raised bed, use materials like brick, stone, or untreated wood. If you choose to use wood to construct your bed, choose a species that is naturally resistant to rot and avoid treated wood entirely. Good choices are cedar, locust and cypress. Treated wood has chemicals that can be harmful to a vegetable garden. If you must use treated wood, consider using a liner to keep chemicals out of the soil.

Now, you shouldn’t get your hopes up and believe that a few tips are going to turn you into an instant professional gardener. However, these tips are a great starting point if you do plan to grow organically. As you implement these tips and hone your skills, you’ll be a professional green-thumb-holder in no time.
