Learn How To Garden In Small Gardens

Basic Steps For Growing Your Organic Garden

One great way to improve your diet and give yourself a fun an interesting hobby is to plant an organic garden. Growing an organic garden does take some planning, though. Are you wondering where to start?

Bring your young ones into the garden with you so they will learn about organic methods. They will enjoy learning about nature and bonding with you.

Aspirin water has disease-prevention properties that can protect plants. Crush and dissolve one and one-half 325mg tablets in two full gallons of plain water. All you have to do is spray the plants with this solution and you should see good results. Be sure to repeat this process every two or three weeks.

If you’re planning on gardening inside, the first thing you should consider is an adequate light source. If you live somewhere without strong natural sunlight, you might want to look into growing plants that thrive in lower-light environments. If you still are unable to get enough light to your plants, consider purchasing grow-lights.

Keep your tools handy to work more efficiently. You can do this by using a bucket, or you can wear rugged pants or a gardening apron that has several pockets. Keep all of the tools you use and your gloves handy and will help you work more efficiently.

Flower Beds

Add three inches of mulch to your flower beds. This is a simple method of discouraging weeds, retaining moisture, and adding excellent nutrients into the garden. Your flower beds should also look beautiful all year long.

Don’t underestimate pine as a great mulch. There are many types of plants with a high acidity, which means they thrive in acidic soil. Plants like these thrive when you use pine needles as mulch. Go ahead and cover the beds you have with needles a couple of inches and while they decompose, they actually disperse some acid into the soil.

Laundry Basket

When the time comes to harvest your produce, collect it using an old laundry basket. It makes a great strainer for your vegetables. When you put your produce in a basket, you can then rinse it off and let it strain any excess water through the laundry basket holes.

Want to get rid of weeds naturally? A good thick layer of newspaper can be laid down to control weeds. Weeds cannot grow without light. By placing newspaper over them, they will not get light and suffocate. Newspapers break down over time, and they make a great addition to compost. Put mulch over top to increase the attractiveness of the pile.

For the best results when growing an organic garden, you should shake your seeds up a little bit. After planted, make sure you agitate the seeds at least twice daily, using your fingers or even a Popsicle stick. This will sound a bit strange. However, it has been proven to cause plants to grow larger.

Use untreated wood, stone, or brick to build a raised bed. Choose wood that is naturally resistant to rot and is untreated. Cypress, locust and cedar are all great examples of what woods to use when building a raised bed. In a vegetable garden, never use treated wood, as the chemicals can leach out into the soil and food crops. If your existing garden structure contains treated wood, at least take the time to make a plastic lining beneath the soil.

Hopefully this article has you well prepared for your endeavor into the relaxing and productive world of organic gardening.
