A smart way to build a healthier diet is to start an organic garden. It does, however, require a great deal of effort to grow. Knowing where to start when planning an organic garden can be a little confusing.

Your children will enjoy the experience of working with you in the organic garden. The benefits for your children will be a closer bond with nature and an understanding of where food comes from.

Ward off certain diseases that plague plants with the use of aspirin. Dissolve one aspirin and a half for 2 gallons of water. Spray the plants with the aspirin solution to help your plants fight disease. Give your plants a spray of the aspirin-water mixture about one time every three weeks.

You must consider how much light is available when starting your plants indoors. If your apartment or home does not receive a huge amount of sunlight, you might want to grow plants that adapt to medium and low light environments instead. If you want to grow a plant which requires more light, you can invest in grow-lights.

Coffee Grounds

Coffee grounds can benefit many types of soil. Coffee grounds have a lot of nutrients that plants can use. Your plants will really bloom if they get the nitrogen they need from coffee grounds or compost or diluted urea.

When planting your organic garden, spacing is an important thing to keep in mind. It’s common to not think about how much space a plant will need once it’s full grown, and you don’t want to crowd your garden. Failure to provide adequate room will restrict growth because it forces plants to compete for valuable nutrients and oxygen. Make sure that you map out your garden layout beforehand and place your seeds with an adequate amount of space in between each.

When planting seeds in containers, remember that the depth should be at least three times bigger than the seed. There are some seeds, however, that you should not cover at all, since they need sunlight to germinate. Two of the common examples are petunias and ageratum. If you don’t know whether your seeds require sun exposure, check the seed package or search online for the information.

A great tip when running your own organic garden, is to lightly ruffle your seedlings with your hand or cardboard, around once or twice per day. You may think it odd, but studies show that this action results in plant growth that is more substantial than would otherwise be achieved.

If you have problem slugs in your organic garden, get rid of them naturally with a beer trap. Start by burying a wide-mouth jar in the soil, ensuring that the rim of the jar is just at the soil’s surface. Fill the jar with beer within one inch of the top. Slugs are attracted to beer. They will crawl into the jar and be trapped.

It is more rewarding to have an organic garden even though it is often more work. Although chemical fertilizers and pesticides can offer impressive claims, choosing the organic route will always yield the best food in the end.

Grow your plants in different areas of the garden every year. Planting the same family of plants in the same area over and over can cause disease and fungus to start growing. The next year, when you plant the same plants in the same area of your garden, they’ll be exposed to these problems. By using the crop rotation method, you will be able to ward off disease and fungus naturally.

Organic gardening is not rocket science, but it does some require some forethought and planning. Research and information will help you get started. Persistence is also a necessary ingredient for success. If you apply the tips you have just read, you should be able to grow healthy plants.
