Cover your flower beds with two or three inches of compost or organic mulch. Not only will you be adding nutrients, but weeds will be less likely to grow and moisture will be retained more easily. Your flower beds should also look beautiful all year long.

Coffee Grounds

Use coffee grounds on your soil. Your plants will thrive from the nitrogen contained in the grounds. Usually, nitrogen is limited with a plant, but using coffee grounds, diluted urea, or compost can make your plants grow faster and taller.

Regular maintenance prevents your gardening tasks from becoming overwhelming and unappealing. Even if you are too busy to tend to your gardens needs every day, you can try little things that will prevent you from having a lot of work when you return to your garden. Even if you’re just taking the dog for a walk, bend down and pick a few weeds.

When planting seeds into a container, the depth of your planting should be three times bigger than the seed. Some seeds need to be in direct sunlight, though, so you need to know information about each type of seed. Ageratum and petunias are two examples of seeds that should not be planted deeply. If you are unsure if your seeds should be covered, refer to the seed packet, or if that is not available, look for information online.

In an organic garden, ruffle any seedlings with a piece of cardboard, or even your hand, a couple times each day. While it seems a little odd, it has been reported that this can encourage plant growth.

Use a beer trap to capture slugs and stop them from eating your plants. Place a jar into the soil so that the top of it’s mouth rests parallel with the soil. After you have placed the jar in the soil, fill with beer to approximately one inch of the top. The scent of the beer will bait the slugs into the jar and they will become trapped.

Create raised beds with stone, brick or untreated wood. Be sure to use wood that is naturally resistant to rotting and that has not been treated. The most popular options for this type of project are cypress, locust and cedar woods. If you use your garden to grow vegetables, avoid using wood that has been treated with chemicals. These toxic chemicals may seep into the soil, damaging your crops. If you have already used lumber that is treated, you can line it with plastic or another type of barrier.

It just takes some time and patience to be able to grow a good organic garden. The above tips will help you make a wonderful garden. It doesn’t matter what you are growing, these tips can help you be successful.
