Allow your children to actively participate in planting your organic garden. A garden can provide a wonderful learning experience for children, and will give you an opportunity to bond with them while you produce healthy food.

Indoor plants have been bred over time to thrive in temperatures that are characteristic of a home. Most indoor plants like to be in about 70 degree temperatures, plus or minus 5 degrees. Warm temperatures encourage plant growth. These temperatures may not be comfortable for you, however. As an alternative to keeping your entire home that warm, consider getting heat lamps for your organic plants.

Prepare the ground for a perennial garden quickly and easily. Simply use a spade or small shovel to get under the grass or turf and flip it over. Then, using wood chips, cover the area to a depth of three or four inches. After a few weeks, you can then dig into the turf and plant the perennials of your choosing.

To avoid tracking the mud and dirt that will get on your gardening shoes, use plastic bags. Having these available lets you keep your flow in movement, and helps you return to your gardening fast so you can finish up your day.

Pine Needles

Pine mulch can be highly effective under the right conditions. A number of plants commonly grown in garden settings do best in an acidic soil. Use pine needles to increase the acid level in your soil if you have plants that require higher acid. Cover soil beds with a few inches of pine needles, and they will disperse acidity to the soil below as they decompose.

Make sure you don’t let your chores pile up when it comes to your garden While you may not be able to spend a lot of time every day in your garden, even little items done daily will stop the mountain of work from growing. For example, if you have a dog, pull a few weeds while you are outdoors with the dog. Over time, you keep your garden weed free without adding any additional time on to your day.

Is there a natural way to kill weeds? Take layers of newspapers and use them for weed control. Weeds can only grow when there is adequate sunlight. By placing newspaper over them, they will not get light and suffocate. Newspapers also break down over time, becoming part of your compost. To improve the appearance of newspaper, simply spread a bit of mulch over it.

Use untreated stone, brick or wood to build raised beds. If you use wood, be sure that it is untreated and naturally rot resistant. Good choices are cedar, locust and cypress. Avoid using treated wood in an organic vegetable garden. The chemicals in the wood can leak into the soil, and eventually into the plants. If you have already used lumber that is treated, you can line it with plastic or another type of barrier.
