Need Help With Organic Gardening? Try These Ideas

Most people are familiar with the idea of organic foods or may have noticed them in food stores. It is easy to spot organic products. These items are packaged in a different manner, and they typically cost much more. Use the tips offered here to learn more about organic gardening.

You should teach your children how to garden alongside you. Gardens are a wonderful place for kids to learn, and working side by side with them can strengthen the bond that you have.

If you’re growing plants indoors, keep your thermostat around 65 or 75 degrees daily. The temperature needs to remain steady and warm so the plants can grow. If you think it would not be comfortable to keep your residence that warm in the winter, consider purchasing a heat lamp to use on the plants.

Laundry Basket

When it is time to gather your produce, you should use an older laundry basket. An old laundry basket makes an excellent strainer for cleaning your produce. Rinse the produce while it sits in the basket, the extra water will go through the holes in the basket.

Use equal parts of green and dried plant material in your compost pile. Green means plant cuttings including grass, produce and weeds. Dried plant material comprises shredded paper, cardboard, sawdust, and straw. Avoid meat, ashes, charcoal, plants with diseases and manure from carnivores.

Do you want to kill weeds naturally? Take layers of newspapers and use them for weed control. Without light, there can be no weeds. Newspapers placed atop weeds will starve them from light and they will eventually die. The newspapers will break down over a period of time, and will become part of your compost. Use mulch on the top in order to make everything look attractive.

Use a beer trap to capture slugs and stop them from eating your plants. Bury a canning jar so that the open mouth and the soil top are level. Pour beer into the jar until it’s almost full. Leave an inch of space between the beer and the jar top. The slugs will be attracted to the beer, and will then become trapped within the jar.

If you want to sell your crops, you should become a certified organic gardener. This will not only increase sales, but it will demonstrate to your customers that your products are legitimate and that you are doing what it takes to grow the best crops.

While it’s harder to grow organically than chemically, the rewards are much better. While chemicals offer an easy solution to many common gardening problems, the organic method is far healthier for you and everyone you share your food with.

Look closely at the seedlings you purchase. For instance, if you buy tomato seedlings for an organic plot, be cautious if you find green, lush-looking starts that have underdeveloped root systems. These starts will stick around on the main plant for several weeks, hindering the growth of the seedling as long as they are present.

Growing your garden at home might not be the most convenient thing for you, but you will save a lot of money and always have the confidence that what you’re eating and feeding your family is as fresh and as healthy as possible. Use the tips you’ve learned here and get started on your garden today.
