Your children can help you with your garden. Growing a garden offers a unique learning experience, and you and your child can grow closer while growing healthy food for your family.

Water infused with aspirin is great for combating plant disease. Dissolve one aspirin and a half for 2 gallons of water. All you need to do is spray the plants with the solution in order to battle common ailments. Your plants should be sprayed one time each three weeks.

Make sure you have some plastic bags around so that you can cover any muddy gardening shoes you have. This helps you stay in the zone so that you can continue gardening when you have completed your tasks in the house.

Pine can make a great mulch. Some plants have a naturally high acidic level, and therefore like acidic soil. Pine needles to line the bed of your garden are easy to find for these kinds of plants. Cover the beds with a couple inches of needles and as they decompose, they will disperse acid to the soil.

Plant Material

Your compost pile should contain green plants and dried ones in equal amounts. Green plant material can include old flowers, fruit waste, grass clippings, vegetable waste, and leaves. Dried plant material comprises shredded paper, cardboard, sawdust, and straw. Certain substances will undermine your composting efforts and cancel out any benefits; these include meat, charcoal, ash or plants that have diseases or fungal growths.

A rule of thumb for when you are planting seeds in containers is to make the hole depth around three times larger than the seed itself. There are exceptions to this rule, however. Some seeds should remain uncovered because they thrive in direct sunlight. These seeds include petunias and ageratum. If you do now know how to plant your seed, consult the information that came with the seed when you bought it or check online for helpful information.

For the best results when growing an organic garden, you should shake your seeds up a little bit. After planted, make sure you agitate the seeds at least twice daily, using your fingers or even a Popsicle stick. Believe it or not, aerating the soil in this manner can actually make your seedlings grow larger.

In order to construct your raised beds, make use of untreated brick, stone, wood and other materials. If you choose to use wood to construct your bed, choose a species that is naturally resistant to rot and avoid treated wood entirely. Some good choices include locust, cypress, and cedar. Never use compost from treated woods in a veggie garden; the chemicals can contaminate your food. If you already have treated lumber in use, line it with some plastic and replace the soil near it.

Being a success at organic gardening requires patience, effort and a willingness to learn. Luckily, information on the subject is in no short supply. You can learn about the roots of the genre and become a skilled gardener. Being a competent organic gardener can be achieved by simply putting in some effort, and learning a few helpful tips.
