Tips On Using Your Green Thumb In Organic Gardening

One great way to improve your diet and give yourself a fun an interesting hobby is to plant an organic garden. However, organic gardening does require a commitment. This can leave you wondering where to start when it comes to organic gardening.

When working in the garden, try to work as efficiently as possible. By having your tools in one location, you will not spend hours looking for them. Set up the tools you will need for your day prior to hitting the garden, then put them away neatly at the end of your gardening session. Get a tool belt if you need to, or a pair of pants with a lot of pockets.

Plastic bags can be kept on hand and reused to slip over your dirty gardening shoes. You will be able to go in and out without having to keep taking your shoes on and off.

Pine Needles

Pine can make surprisingly great mulch. A number of plants commonly grown in garden settings do best in an acidic soil. If you have some of these plants, then pine needles are an easy way to add acid to their bed. Covering your plant beds with a layer of pine needles will allow the pine needles to disperse their acidic nutrients into the soil for your plants.

Do not let your gardening chores add up. There are certain little things to help you keep up with your garden, even if you don’t have the necessary time each day to do everything. You can pull a few weeds when you take your dog outside.

Consider solving your weed problem without the use of toxic chemicals. Use several layers of newspapers for weed control. Weeds need sun for growth, just like any other plant. They will suffocate and die if you cover them with newpapers. Old newspapers are a valuable addition to your compost heap. Try adding some mulch on top of it to make appear more attractive.

Use alcohol to help control the slugs in your garden by fashioning a beer trap. Dig a hole the size of a glass jar, and bury the jar with the top at ground level. Fill the jar with beer within one inch of the top. The slugs will be attracted to the beer, and will then become trapped within the jar.

You can grow a great organic garden if you decide to dedicate your time and efforts to it. It also holds true, that if you want to see results, you need to keep putting effort into it. Keeping the aforementioned tips in mind, you are well on your way to becoming successful with organic gardening.
