Mulch is necessary for a healthy soil. Mulch acts as a protective shield for the soil it covers. It can also keep the ground from overheating during hot weather, which will protect the roots of your plants from damage. The layer of mulch will also minimize evaporation, reducing your need to water as frequently as you would a garden without mulch. As an added bonus, weed growth will be stunted.
